Silver Sunday - Feb 7

The last of our weekly Silver Sundays. Thank you to our hostess Beth at Gypsy Fish Journal.

This week I pay homage to the 2 Mom's in my life

First, my Mom who doesn't understand my sentimental streak or where it came from. Mom received this bracelet as a 16th birthday gift from her older brother who was my godfather-which is why I received the bracelet not long ago. Sounds kinda sentimental to me.

And my mom-in-law - the quintessential farmer's wife who had all the laundry on the line by 8am Monday morning, hearty meals including homemade dessert on the table on time all the time, and whose Silver never knew what tarnish was. Poor woman just couldn't understand why her new daughter-in-law, who worked 40-45 hours a week, didn't iron her tea towels and bed linens. So why did I receive the tea service? Was I supposed to feel guilty when the tea service looks like this?

Well maybe I do a little. After 1 hour and 23 minutes of hard labour, it looks just like when she had it.

(Now maybe my ears will stop ringing ;>)

Now I am off to visit all the Silver Sunday'ers. Looking forward to seeing you all at the new Second Sunday of the month Silver Sundays.

Amethyst - February's Birthstone

Happy Birthday all you February Babies!

Your birthstone is the very lovely Amethyst

The folklore attached to this gem associates it with sobriety, tranquility, protection and peace. The amethyst has also been linked to improving the skin and preventing baldness, as well as protection from deceit.

It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

The amethyst is known as the Bishop's Stone and is still worn by Roman Catholic Bishops. The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It is thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius.

The amethyst birthstone comes in varying shades of purple, from a pale lilac to deep violet. Amethyst is very hard wearing, its durability will ensure that it lasts for a very long time.

The February born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they, the amethyst will wear.

Silver Sunday

It's Silver Sunday and I've been busy cleaning silver....again. It's all Beth at Gypsy Fish Journal's fault ;o). Be sure to visit Beth and all the other ladies who have been busy cleaning their silver. So this is what I cleaned this week.

2 silver spoons that I have no idea what they are used for. The one on the left could be used as a sauce spoon. The one on the right is from my mother-in-law and she used it when she served cranberries. Update: I just visited Susan at Savoring Time in the Kitchen. She has one of these spoons-its a bon-bon spoon. Love it.

My baby fork and spoon set. The spoon at the top is my husband's baby spoon.

Grown-up meat fork and soup spoons to match. I don't know how that happened!

My "still a young child but never used set".

A silver pencil laa dee dah, and my Huckleberry Dog spoon. We ate a lot of cereal to get these spoons. My sister got a Yogi Bear spoon. Boy those were the days when companies gave out the good stuff.

This is a sterling silver wine stopper. My husband, son and I took a trip to Sweden and Denmark. We were shopping on the Stroget (the famous walking street) when we came upon Georg Jensen Silversmith Shop. Well what's a girl to do, I had to go in. And since I collect Roosters, this one was not staying behind.

Our home base on our trip to Scandinavia was Malmo, Sweden. We walked everywhere. Everyday we passed a jewellery store where this Viking and his ship were in the window. Everyday I stopped and looked. He was calling my name. I listened.

This week's jewellery treasure is a handmade sterling silver and pearl bracelet. So much fun to make.

Thank you for visiting. Please come again.

Roosters!
