Happy Canada Day! July 1

Happy 144th Birthday, Canada!
1867-2011

Happy you are spending Canada Day with us!

Officially beginning on July 1, 1867, the Federal Dominion of Canada was formed with the new provinces of Ontario and Quebec (until then together comprising the Province of Canada) along with two other British colonies, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which also became provinces.

This motley group are the guys responsible - known as the Fathers of Confederation. The guy sitting on the step was John A MacDonald, Canada's first prime minister.

Being a British Colony, Canada flew the Union Jack.

Every morning school started with singing God Save the Queen (see she does smile!)

Then the pledge of allegiance:

We pledge allegiance to the flag
And to the Queen and Commonwealth
For Which it Stands

Then we sang the Nation Anthem

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

And then the Lord's Prayer

That was before any of the above started to offend people

Then in 1965 Canada got her own flag!

It was a controverisal issue. Some did not want the Union Jack to go. Some did not like the look of the new flag. The maple leaf was designed by George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson based on the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965. This date is now celebrated annually as National Flag of Canada Day.

Below is a picture of Canadian flags decorating the Veteran graves at the local cemetery. Because of their selfless actions

along with these men (Canadian armed forces in Afghanistan)

I am free to write this post. Godspeed guys!

"The Maple Leaf Forever" is a Canadian song written by Alexander Muir (1830–1906) in 1867

The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!

Proud to be Canadian, eh!!!!!

The British Are Coming! The British Are Coming!

On June 30th The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will arrive in Canada for their first official tour together

In the official statement, William said, "Catherine and I are very much looking forward to our Tour of Canada. We hope to be able to meet as many people as possible and to see as much of the extraordinary and diverse country as we can. I have wonderful memories from my last times in Canada, and as such we consider it a great privilege to have been invited to Canada for our first joint Tour."

We are excited to see you too!

Will the lovely Duchess wear red and white on Canada Day - July 1

like her granny-in-law, Queen Elizabeth did when she visited Canada in 2010?

or like her late mother-in-law Princess Diana did?

Speaking of Princess Diana, July 1st would have been her 50th birthday

The cover of this week's Newsweek. Does this creep out anyone else?

Pink Saturday - June 24

Welcome to Pink Saturday. A huge thank you to Beverly of How Sweet The Sound for hosting our weekly meeting to salute PINK!

Royal Ascot took place in London England the week of June 13-15. The horse races have become secondary to the parade of wacky hats. You can see more here.

"If it doesn't fart or eat hay, she isn't interested." -- Prince Philip speaking of his daughter, Princess Anne. The best I have seen her look in a long time. Kinda looks like she knows it, too!

Sophie, Countess of Wessex looking like her hat is giving her a headache.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth looking lovely in dark pink or light red?

My favourite, this lovely shade of pink makes her glow

Oops, how did this get here?

Thanks for visiting

Pink Saturday - June 18

Hey it's the best day of the week - it's Pink Saturday! Thanks to Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for inviting us to join her in celebrating the Pink.

Last Saturday it was Trooping the Colour in England to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's birthday. You can read more about it here.

This adorable young lady is Lady Louise Wessex, the 7 year old daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex- Prince Edward and Sophie. Love her hair.

The Countess of Wessex looking like she just realized she should have taken the Metamucil AFTER the parade!

Darn pigeons!!!

Thanks for visiting.

The Mystery of the Earrings!

Why does everyone make a big deal when a Royal wears the same item of clothing twice?

The Duchess of Cambridge circa 2009 at a friends wedding

Here she wears the same beautiful blue brocade coat with a blue dress and blue fascinator to the service celebrating Prince Philip's 90th birthday. Personally, I like this look the best. But the whole point of this post is to point out the earrings.

Sapphire surrounded with diamonds hanging off of what looks like a diamond stud. Could these be Diana's earrings?

The drops are removable. Maybe Harry got the stud part (no pun intended!) And William got the drops.

A prize for whoever solves the mystery!
